Safenet: a Calico group project
We are a feminist women’s organisation, emerged from the women’s rights movement of the 1970’s as a direct response to patriarchy, sexism, and male violence against women. Domestic abuse services and refuges were created by women, for women, many of them survivors themselves, to provide spaces free from men where safety, healing, mutual support, and solidarity could thrive.
We recognise the essential role of single-sex, trauma-informed environments in supporting women and children recovering from abuse and violence. These spaces prioritise their safety and uphold their dignity at every stage of healing. Meeting the needs of all survivors remains our central aim, ensuring access to safe spaces where trauma-informed support is available. we believe women and children impacted by male violence benefit profoundly from support and accommodation in single-sex services.
These environments help reduce distress, support recovery, and protect those most vulnerable. We strongly advocate for the continued provision of lawful, single-sex domestic abuse services under the Equality Act, putting the safety and well-being of survivors at the heart of our work.
Due to the nature of the charity the volunteer for this position must be female.
